Description

Changes in pH, hardness and alkalinity can all indicate a change in chemistry that may have resulted from a spill, sewage or increased algal blooms.

Benefits of test strips

  • Testing is fast easy and convenient it is said they deliver greater accuracy then liquid test kits
  • Reduces the chance of human error of associated with other tests.
  • No measuring samples or counting number of drops.
  • Require less technique

Considerations

  • Ensure proper handling and storage
  • Store in a cool dry place

pH

pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of water.  It is usually measured by using a colorimetric test –  test strip changes colour with increased acidity or alkalinity. pH varies naturally within streams as a result of photosynthesis.  There are a number of reasons that water may have extreme pH values:

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14:

  • A ph range of 6.5 – 8 is optimal for freshwater.
  • A range of 8 – 9 is optimal for estuarine and sea water.

Acidic 0 to 6.9

Neutral 7

Alkaline 7.1 to 14

As an environmental technician that deals with wastewater remediation I use an array of probes. When switching from sample to sample the probes need frequent calibration which is time consuming and finicky in the field. I always carry test strips and these ones are accurate and easy to use. Highly recommend
